Freight glossary

HS code

The Harmonized System code — a 6-to-10 digit number that classifies a product for customs and sets its duty rate.

Every product crossing a border is classified under an HS code. The first six digits are standardized worldwide; countries add more digits for their own tariff detail. The code determines the duty rate, any restrictions, and the paperwork required.

Getting the classification right matters: the wrong code can mean overpaying duty, underpaying (and facing penalties), or having a shipment held. Forwarders and customs brokers classify goods as part of clearance.

Why it matters

Duty is charged on the HS code, so classification directly sets your landed cost. Rumbo verifies the code and simulates the duty before you ship.

Example

Emeralds fall under HS chapter 71; a BBQ smoker under chapter 84 — very different duty rates by country.
